Last June’s Brexit referendum is undoubtedly the biggest political event of the last few decades in the UK. The vote split families, ended friendships, and showed cultural divisions in Britain in a stark light.
All of Scotland, London, and most major cities across the country voted to remain in the European Union, while virtually every other region backed leaving the 28-nation bloc.
In the 2017 edition of its annual TransformingWorld Atlas — which uses maps and other data visualisations to illustrate major global issues — Bank of America Merrill Lynch focuses part of its attention on Brexit. The map below shows Britain if it were to be resized according to how people voted in the referendum.
The map shows areas where leave secured a higher proportion of the vote as bigger than they actually are, and those where remain triumphed as smaller, creating a fascinating distortion of the UK’s iconic silhouette. Scotland appears shrunken, while middle and southern England is bloated.
