KUALA LUMPUR ― A recently released migration report that revealed more people were moving out from Kuala Lumpur to Selangor and Penang, was a clear indication that Malaysians were “voting with their feet”, a DAP MP has said.
Serdang MP Ong Kian Ming said the findings also proved that more people were gaining confidence with Pakatan Harapan’s leadership in the two Opposition-governed states.
“The figures from the Migration Report clearly shows that Malaysians are voting with their feet my moving in large numbers to Selangor and Penang. This is a clear indication that Malaysians have confidence in the state governments of Selangor and Penang under Pakatan Harapan.
“The achievement of Penang is even more remarkable when one considers that it is only the eigth most populous state in Malaysia and yet, it is able to attract the second highest number of net migrants in the entire Malaysia,” Ong said in his statement.
In its Migration Survey Report for last year, the Department of Statistics (DOSM) revealed that Selangor was the main receiving state of inter-state migrants, with the “main sender” being Kuala Lumpur with a net outflow of 163,400 between 2009 and 2016, followed by Perak.
However, DOSM said that for intra-state movement, the majority of migrants at state level were also focused to urban areas within the same state, between 2015 and 2016.
“Following family was the main reason for migration, exceeding 40 per cent for 2015–2016. This was followed by environment and career with percentages exceeding 20 per cent respectively,” DOSM said in the report that was released on May 26.
It added that almost two-thirds, or 63.9 per cent of the total number of migrants were intra-state migrants, while inter-state migrants were 24.8 per cent., which indicated that migrants would rather move within a state instead of moving to another state.
Despite that, Ong acknowledged that the outflow of migrants from Kuala Lumpur to other states was likely motivated by the high housing prices in the city too, coupled with “attractive policies” offered by the Selangor government.
“The reasons for these migration patterns were not given in the Migration Report. But it is likely that the state of Perak is losing population because of better job prospects in places like Selangor and Penang, said Ong.
“For the period of 2015-2016, Pulau Pinang registered the highest positive effectiveness ratio of migration at 58.4 per cent.
“This means that the people of Pulau Pinang will be increased by 58 persons for every 100 of inter-state migrants that migrate in and out of the state,” Ong added.
