MALAY PRIDE VS BUSINESS: A CHANCE FOR PROTON’S REBIRTH
As widely expected, DRB-Hicom has struck an accord with China-based Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co Ltd to allow the latter to acquire 49.9% of Proton’s share.
In the meantime, Proton is also disposing all of its shares in Lotus, 51% of which is acquired by Geely with Etika Automotive absorbing the balance 49%.
For years Proton has been eyeing suitable foreign partners, and after stringent selection and thoughtful consideration, the national carmaker has decided upon Geely with the hope the deal would give Proton an opportunity to emerge strong again.
Established in 1983, Proton launched Malaysia’s first national car model in 1985 which at one point of time commanded almost 70% share in the local automobile market.
Unfortunately the good time did not last and Proton’s sale began to decline in the face of stiff competition, making it a heavy burden for the government.
Last April, the government provided RM1.5 billion low-interest loan to Proton to help it restructure its business.
After the acquisition of 49.9% share by Geely, Proton not only can retain tens of thousands of employees, it can also make inroads into the gigantic Chinese market through Geely’s extensive domestic business network. In addition, through technology transfer from Geely, Proton will also be able to improve its competitiveness.
This is going to be a win-win deal that will give Proton its much needed chance for rebirth while serving also the strategic needs of Geely.
As Geely’s executive vice president cum CFO Daniel Li has said, Proton and Lotus will further strengthen Geely’s global strategy, while Proton will act as an industrial synergy base for Geely into the Asean market.
To penetrate Southeast Asia’s right-hand-drive automobile market, Geely will first need to have its own right-hand-drive production lines, and Proton’s Tanjung Malim plant will meet this need.
Moreover, Geely will also take a controlling stake in Lotus through the deal to help it venture into the race car market.
A binding agreement has been signed between DRB-Hicom and Geely on the sale of Proton, and a final agreement is expected to be signed in mid-July.
Geely has full confidence in Proton’s future, and has vowed to revive Proton with its innovative technology and systematic management.
It is therefore essential for Proton to grasp this golden opportunity to deliver itself from the current doldrums and forge ahead with Geely by instituting a thorough reform and enhancing its operational efficiency and competitiveness to seal its place in the tough global marketplace.
