IGP RUSHES TO JUMP ON RAMADAN BANDWAGON: THE STAR NOW PROBED UNDER SEDITION ACT FOR OFFENDING MUSLIMS
THE police will investigate MCA-owned English daily The Star for sedition over its front page last Saturday, BH Online reported today.
Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar said there would be two investigations into The Star based on the Sedition Act and Section 298A of the Penal Code.
Section 298A of the Penal Code refers to causing disharmony, disunity and hatred by words either written or spoken.
According to Khalid, the police are investigating the matter as there were many reports against The Star’s front page.
“We will call those responsible to have their statements taken as to who used the photo and put up that headline last Saturday,” said Khalid after a BAKTI event in Kuala Lumpur today.
On Saturday, The Star had run the headline “Malaysian Terrorist Leader” above a picture of Muslims performing terawih prayers on its front page.
Various political parties have objected to the newspaper’s front page, which they said gave the impression that all Muslims were terrorists.
The Star has since issued an apology, stating that on hindsight, it should have been more sensitive to the feelings of its Muslim readers.
The Home Ministry issued a show-cause letter to The Star yesterday over the front page.
Meanwhile Khalid said the police were still waiting for verification from their Philippine counterparts on the two Malaysians who were killed in the fighting in Marawi last week.
“But according to our investigations, five Malaysians were among the militants,” he added.
